Horror plots are joined together by the elements of the genre which are distictly seperate (or stolen and recreated) from all other genres. These are themselves recreated and conjoined in other ways within the subgenres of the Horror genre; ie. gothic, teen slasher, grindhouse, horror comedy, sci fi horror
The plot elements themselves revolve around the most important element...
The seemingly indestructable entity or force which lies at the center of the story
The protagonist(s) of the story and their colleagues are drawn to this entity by fate (recently chance has become a favourite) or It is drawn to them for reasons which are unfolded by the narrative over time (often in the denouement, but also by the way the characters are shot)
Mayhem Ensues; ordered or unordered (usually the former) in which the members of the group are eliminated, individually or in small groups.
The resourceful character seeks to overcome the entity, by a series of different means initially ineffective, but later with a measure of seeming success.
The reason for all of this is explained in a denouement. It can be long and convoluted (Seven) or it can be short and sweet (Halloween).
The entity survives for one last assault. The protagonist overcomes, either by destroying the entity or escaping.
